Audit Your ABA Business Directory Profiles

Check names, locations, contact routes and outdated descriptions across public listings without creating misleading location pages.

An ABA business may appear on several public directories while its website carries a different phone number, location or service description. A profile audit helps you identify contradictions and decide which records need correction.

Start with the places where your actual business is listed. This is a maintenance task. Creating more profiles does not establish that the business qualifies for a platform or will rank locally.

Make a listing inventory

Record the directory name, profile URL, account owner and current business details. Include profiles created by former staff or outside partners when you can identify them. Note whether the business controls the profile or needs to request a correction.

Keep passwords and recovery details in the organization's authorized account process, not in the public-information worksheet. Name the role responsible for future listing updates.

Compare against confirmed business information

Review the real business name, website, phone number and applicable location or service area. Confirm these details with the operations team before editing. A marketer should not infer a new location from an informal expansion discussion.

Check the destination links. A profile can contain a valid URL that leads to an obsolete application or an old business announcement. The destination should answer the question the listing invites the reader to ask.

Respect each platform's eligibility rules

Directories have different requirements. Read the current rules before creating or changing a listing. A digital-only business should not assume that eligibility for one directory establishes eligibility for every local-business platform.

Google's Business Profile guidelines require accurate representation and contain specific eligibility and location rules. Check the current guidance for your situation. Do not add keyword phrases to the business name merely to seek search visibility.

Review descriptions and categories

Use an accurate description of the current business. Remove claims about services, credentials or locations that the team cannot confirm. Choose categories according to the platform's current guidance and the actual offering.

Avoid copying the same long sales paragraph into fields designed for different purposes. A directory description may need concise business information, while a service page can explain the offering in more detail.

Identify stale and duplicate records

When you find conflicting profiles, check the platform's process for correction or consolidation. Do not create another profile simply because recovering an existing one feels difficult. That can leave more contradictory information for readers to encounter.

Record the correction request, owner and status. A submitted edit is different from a confirmed live correction. Review the published result after the platform processes the request.

Use an audit worksheet

  • Profile URL and platform.
  • Verified business details to compare.
  • Field requiring correction.
  • Authorized account owner.
  • Current platform rule relevant to the change.
  • Submitted action and confirmed result.

Keep a dated record so the next reviewer can distinguish old observations from current status. Recheck the inventory after approved location, contact or service changes.

Connect listings to useful pages

A general listing can point to accurate business information. A relevant provider-service listing can point to the actual service explanation. Our service-page copy guide helps organize that destination.

Correcting public information supports a clearer reader experience. Evaluate the audit by whether the records now agree and links work, rather than promising that a profile update will produce a particular search position.
