UTM Tracking for ABA Marketing: Label Your Campaigns

Separate Instagram, LinkedIn and partner traffic with a naming system your team can maintain.

UTM tracking helps a website analytics system identify a campaign label carried in a link. It does not prove that a person became a client, applied for a role or purchased a product. Decide which question you want the labels to answer before adding them to every URL.

For an ABA business, a useful first question is “Which source brought visits to this specific resource page?” That is different from measuring a clinical or business outcome.

Understand the main labels

Google's campaign URL guidance describes campaign parameters such as source, medium and campaign. Use source for the platform or partner, medium for the broad channel and campaign for the initiative. Additional content labels can distinguish creative variations.

Choose a naming convention once. For example, a source might be instagram, a medium might be organic-social and a campaign might be clinic-introduction. These are illustrative labels, not a required universal standard.

Use one example your team can copy safely

A fictional link is https://example.com/resources?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=organic-social&utm_campaign=clinic-introduction&utm_content=carousel-a. Its destination is a placeholder, so replace it with your actual public page before use.

Do not add a name, email, diagnosis, phone number or other sensitive information to the parameters. URLs can be copied, logged and shared. Campaign labels should describe the campaign, not the person following the link.

Create a campaign register

FieldExample job
DestinationThe exact public page the campaign promotes
SourceThe platform or named partner
MediumThe agreed channel category
CampaignThe initiative's stable label
ContentA specific creative version, if needed
OwnerThe person who checks the link and report

Keep letter case, spaces and punctuation consistent with your chosen convention. If five colleagues use five labels for the same source, the report may make one source look like several.

Open the complete URL on a phone and confirm the destination works. Check that the page answers the message in the post. If your analytics tool provides a testing view, use it to confirm how the labels are recorded.

Do not assume that changing one platform's link automatically changes a printed QR code or a partner's existing post. Store the final tracked link beside the approved asset. A change in destination needs a review of those placements too.

Keep measurement stages separate

A website visit is not a completed form. A Gumroad outbound click is not a verified purchase. A candidate viewing a careers page is not a completed application. Name the stage each report measures so the team does not mistake attention for an outcome.

Our storefront records outbound checkout redirects separately from consent-based visitor analytics. Verified Gumroad sales require a connected sale-notification and verification process. Do not calculate a sales conversion rate from clicks while that connection is absent.

Review attribution limits honestly

A shared link may be used by someone outside the intended audience. Browser privacy choices and blocked analytics can reduce measured traffic. A person may return through a different route. The label provides context, not a complete history of the relationship.

Use the report alongside the actual business follow-up process. Our clinic marketing plan explains why inquiries and follow-up need their own operational checks.

Where production and promotion fit

For a custom marketing brief, include the destination and naming convention before designing. If discussing a placement through ABA Business Builders, agree on the link and distinguish reported views, website visits and relevant inquiries in advance.
